Why Should You Go Green?

We’ve seen tons of information on Going Green throughout the news, while shopping, at work, and school, but why should you want to go green? Just think of this, in 1800 there were only 1 billion people on the planet, after World War I, there were 2 billion, and at the turn of the century we were at 6 billion and counting. Current estimates forecast that by the time we hit 2050, the wold population will be over 9 billion with a significantly lower amount of resources to go around by that time frame.

As you probably know, our natural resources are limited. As the population of the world continues to grow, the strain on the resources that we have continues to grow with less and less being available for future generations. Unless something changes, within a few generations our great grandchildren will not be able to enjoy the same quality of life that we have been able to enjoy while for the most part not living green lifestyles. It has been almost an after thought in western country’s to have a conservative mindset because of the abundance of resources at a low price available to us today. What will our relatives due when they can’t assume that clean air, water, fuel, or land to grow food is readily available like it is today?

You don’t have to be a radical left-wing activist to Go Green in today’s world and live an environmentally friendly life. The small changes are what make a big difference. Just think about what you throw in the trash every day and think about what you can properly dispose of instead of sending on its way to a landfill. Things like batteries for example, will leak when put into the standard landfill and will ultimately pollute the groundwater in the surrounding area as well as pollute the land that is used for farming. If you’ve never been to a landfill, its worth the trip to see just where your trash goes. Typically, a landfill will simply have a large ditch that the trash is dumped into and then covered with topsoil. There is a bottom layer to the fill, but it is not water proof, and harmful chemicals do and will leak out of the landfill. Once the drinking water is polluted, there is no turning back to remove the contaminates. Other items to consider not throwing away are anything that can be recycled.
